UWI, HCC move to combat non-communicable diseases

THE UNIVERSITY OF THE West Indies Open Campus and the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in an attempt to combat the high level of non-communicable diseases (NCDS) in the region.

The agreement was signed by HCC president Sir Trevor Hassell and Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the open campus Dr Luz Longsworth today at the campus’ Learning Centre.

Dr Longsworth said that the partnership was an important way to merge two key sectors, education and health.

“We see that the high rate of NCDs in our region is part of our developmental challenge and perhaps it hadn’t been seen before, but thanks to the work that the HCC has been doing we are seeing that link immediately,” she said.

The MOU will enable the two to develop a joint programme, as well assist the HCC with the development and delivery of regional online and face-to-face training, to serve as a hub for capacity building of human resources and a platform to further educate on socio-economic and health issues. (TG)
