MINISTER OF FINANCE Chris Sinckler’s last budget before general elections will be a hard one for him to gain political advantage through “economic goodies”, given the prevailing economic conditions.
Political scientist Peter Wickham said that Sinckler ran the risk of being regarded as “highly reckless” if “before the end of May” when the Budget is expected he attempted to offer up an “election budget”, which usually includes tax breaks and other giveaways.
Wickham’s comments follow on the heels of word from Prime Minister Freundel Stuart to a small committee of the heads of the Social Partnership Groups that Budget Day will be before the end of May.
Stuart and Sinckler met with the group on Tuesday to discuss the proposals by two working groups regarding the fiscal deficit and foreign exchange reserves. (AC)
