Water rates rise forecast

MINISTER OF INDUSTRY and Commerce Donville Inniss says he has not seen any evidence that Barbadians will soon pay more for water, but economist Jeremy Stephen is insisting a hike in rates is unavoidable.

Stephen suggested that the situation would be compounded by yet another downgrade for the island, worsening Government’s economic standing.

The two, along with president of the Barbados Association of Professional Engineers Grenville Phillips II, were guests yesterday on Starcom Network’s Brass Tacks Sunday.

“We just got downgraded, we will get downgraded again in June. The cost of governance, before you get any efficiency measures in place, will increase possibly around 30 per cent, especially as global interest rates come up,” Stephen said. (WILLCOMM)
