Putting brakes on illegal racing

THE POLICE ARE being accused of unfairly cracking down on modified cars in light of the recent death of a police officer in a road accident.

A driver, who requested anonymity, said it was becoming a major problem as officers were asking car owners who were suspected of driving cars modified for extra speed to open the bonnets for inspection.

The WEEKEND NATION set out to verify this and find out about the legality of it all. In doing so, another issue came to light – illegal racing vs organised racing and any possible connection.

A legal drag racer, who also requested anonymity, said it would be “madness” for any officer to open a car’s bonnet without a warrant. (CA)
