Some schools close early due to reported staff shortages

THREE SECONDARY SCHOOLS closed early today due to an apparent sick-out by teachers.

The Ministry of Education, through the Barbados Government Information Service, asked parents and guardians to collect their charges from Combermere School, Grantley Adams Memorial School and The Lodge School.

Students sitting Caribbean Examinations Council exams were not affected.

No official reason was given for the early end to classes but there have been reports of high levels of absenteeism by teachers at some schools.

President of the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union Mary Redman told Starcom Network she was aware some teachers stayed away from school.

“We’re in the process of doing due diligence to ascertain the exact reason for this, but we can definitely say that it is not industrial action, because when we take industrial action as a union, we follow a set procedure,” she said. (NB)
