A GOVERNMENT MINISTER has defended Barbados’ onshore oil drilling programme, insisting that contrary to suggestions that it had been put on hold, several wells had been sunk since 2009.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Senator Darcy Boyce, disclosed that between 2009 and 2015, 25 oil wells had been dug.

However, the state-owned Barbados National Oil Company Limited (BNOCL) was still relying on many of the older, proven well sources for oil and gas because not all of the newer wells had proven to be commercial successes, he said.

He was leading debate yesterday in the Senate on the National Petroleum Corporation Amendment Bill, which was passed recently in the House of Assembly. (GE)
