THE DAYS OF USING CASH for bus fare in Barbados may soon be a thing of the past for some commuters.

Members of the Alliance Owners of Public Transport (AOPT) Inc. and the Transport Authority of Barbados will be introducing a new smart card to workers and members of the public during a walk-through of the bus terminals and taxi stands in and around Bridgetown on Saturday.

A source close to the association told the MIDWEEK NATION yesterday that the actual launch should coincide with the rollout of a pilot project for the Transport Implementation Project at the end of next month.

Noting that several countries across the world had already gone the route of using a card to pay fares for public transportation, AOPT president Roy Raphael said the safety of both passengers and workers of public service vehicles played a major role in the move to go plastic. (YB)
