Obese jockey too heavy for horse, says PM

THE JOCKEY HAS become too heavy for the horse to bear, said Prime Minister Freundel Stuart last night as he painted a picture of the severe burden of the country’s expenses.

However, in his hour-long presentation, which began at 9 p.m. in the House of Assembly yesterday during the Budget Debate, he gave the assurance that under the ruling Democratic Labour Party the most vulnerable would be protected.

The 66-year-old leader said that since Independence in 1966 the state had been investing in the areas of health, education, housing, sanitation and employment for the people of Barbados. That period of entitlement, which came with spiralling expenditure, had come to an end and now began the period of responsibility, he stated.

“The state has found itself in a position where with spiralling expenditure in those years . . . and with dwindling revenue the jockey, it seems, has become too heavy for the horse and whenever the jockey becomes too heavy for the horse, the horse cannot compete effectively,” Stuart said. (AC)
