‘Don’t take storms lightly’

WHILE A NATIONAL shutdown procedure is being reviewed, it may take an actual disaster before Barbadians take it seriously.

During the Press conference on Thursday for the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season in the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) conference room in Warrens, St Michael, director Kerry Hinds said they hoped Barbadians would realise the procedure was for their safety.

“The Government’s legal agencies have been asked to look at the guidelines. It is a case where we would wish persons to ensure their own safety; you do not want to go to the extent where it is something draconian but instead encourage persons to follow the guidelines because at the end of the day it is designed to reduce loss of life,” she said.

Acting director of the Barbados Meteorological Services, Sonia Nurse, added it may take first-hand experience to learn painful lessons. (CA)
