Another aim at low baby numbers

MINISTER OF EDUCATION Ronald Jones delivered another nugget about slow population growth yesterday before an organisation whose traditional focus has been on controlling the number of children in a family.

Jones, in remarks during a service to mark the 63rd anniversary of the Barbados Family Planning Association (BFPA) at St David’s Anglican Church, cited the declining number of children being seen in primary schools as an indication of stalling population growth. And he attributed it to the selfishness of some Barbadians.

He said his ministry had, over a period, seen a decline of over 700 children in the primary schools. “They have not migrated. They have not gone anywhere. They just do not exist,” he said.

Jones added it was an indication of a declining population in a small society, especially one that depended on the youth. (LK)
