VARIOUS GROUPS TRIED, but it was questionable whether they made a dent in the Sargassum seaweed clogging the island’s beaches.
The groups were taking part in the National Conservation Commission’s (NCC) first Sargassum Seaweed clean-up for the year at different beaches on Saturday morning.
NCC workers and individuals from community groups and businesses raked stretches of beaches along the South and East coasts and piled the seaweed high, while rafts of seaweed washed ashore on the incoming tide and more bobbed in the near-shore waters.
“It was way more than we expected,” said Andrea Grazette, chairperson of the Christ Church Parish Independence Committee. (HLE)
