Barbados lose to St Vincent, at bottom of tables

Article by RACHELLE AGARD

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS St Vincent and the Grenadines secured a comfortable 4-2 victory over Barbados yesterday evening in the Windward Islands Football Association Men’s Football Tournament at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium in Grenada.

Barbados led at the end of the first period, but a second half hat-trick turned the match in St Vincent’s favour.

The Tridents opened the scoring in the sixth minute through Weymouth Wales midfielder Hadan Holligan.

The ball ricocheted off his right foot, just in front the goal bars, after keeper Kevan Henry came off the line to save a long shot attempt from Tulsa Football Club forward Rashad Jules.

St Vincent equalised in the 12th minute compliments a penalty kick from Chevel Cunningham.

But three minutes later, UWI Blackbirds midfielder Mario Harte put them in the lead, sending the ball into the right side of the net.

As the second half began, Barbados’ back line defence dropped drastically, giving St Vincent the advantage.

That was all the opportunity Myron Samuel, a striker for Seattle Sounders FC 2 needed, and he secured a hat-trick in the 47th, 55th and 90th minutes to turn the match.

Grenada remain in the lead with seven points, followed closely by Dominica and St Lucia who are both on five points each.

Defending champions St Vincent and the Grenadines have now secured their first three points of the tournament, while Barbados bring up the rear with one point. (RA)
