AS BARBADOS GETS READY to name a new Governor General to succeed just retired Sir Elliott Belgrave, the debate has arisen again on the need for the office.
If political activist David Comissiong had his way, the country would instead move from a monarchy to a republican form of government and have a president.
However, former Independent Senator Dr Frances Chandler (right) is not supporting such a move, saying she saw no benefit to the country as the elected government of the day had total control of the affairs of state.
Comissiong told the DAILY NATION yesterday it was time for Barbados to take the important step and finally become a republic, as promised by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart in 2015. (AD)
