Mountain of debt

BARBADOS is facing a mountain of debt.

To be precise, the national debt – the total amount Government owes to foreign and local creditors – was $13.4 billion at the end of March this year, according to Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler. He revealed this during his Budget presentation last month.

This means each of the 150 000-odd employed and self-employed Barbadian citizens is presently burdened with paying approximately $89 382 to eliminate this debt.
