Outages a safety measure

BARBADOS LIGHT and Power Company (BL&)P) is intentionally causing outages in some areas, and the news has given some customers a jolt.

The SUNDAY SUN understands that some businesses and households have been reporting disruptions to their power supply and have been shocked when told by BL&P that those disruptions were deliberate.

As part of an Under Frequency Load Shedding Protection Scheme, the electric utility has been using “emergency interruptions” to stop its generators from overloading and damaging the island’s electricity infrastructure.

Consumer advocate and director-general of Barbados Consumers Research Organisation Inc., Malcolm Gibbs-Taitt, said he was unaware of the practice and wondered if the Fair Trading Commission had given its blessing. (SC)
