Regional gun threat

A CARIBBEAN WATCHDOG agency urged governments two years ago to strengthen measures to control gun trafficking and crime.

The advice from the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF) followed a study into the proliferation of small arms and ammunition in 13 member states, including Barbados, Jamaica, St Vincent and Trinidad and Tobago, that was based on the countries’ responses to a questionnaire.

The study from the agency’s Risk, Trends and Methods Group found that criminals obtained and used small arms and ammunition primarily for drug trafficking purposes and gang violence.

Self-employed persons, taxi drivers, vendors and fishermen were some of the groups of persons identified as being among the weapons peddlers. (MB)
