THE PROSECUTOR WHO became associated with some of the country’s most high-profile court cases, including a decision to take manslaughter guilty pleas from one of the Campus Trendz killers, died suddenly on Saturday night.

The death of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Charles Leacock sent shock waves through the legal fraternity and organisations with which he was associated.

Leacock died in Orlando, Florida, where he was undergoing prostate surgery. He was five months shy of his 60th birthday.

Born in Guyana on December 28, 1957, Leacock rose from Crown Counsel in the DPP’s chambers in 1984 to head the prosecution service in 1997. With that appointment, he became Barbados’ fifth and youngest DPP at age 39. (HLE)
