Freedom at last from Trinidad legal bind

A BARBADIAN man who was “trapped” in Trinidad for the past four years as he appealed an 18-month drug sentence will finally be able to return home.

Shawn Worrell, a 44-year-old father of two, was found guilty of possessing ten grammes of marijuana back in 2013 and was sentenced to 18 months hard labour.

He appealed but it was only last Monday, after an urgent application for a variation to the sentence was made, that Worrell was finally set free by the Court of Appeal, which sentenced him to eight months, the time he served on remand.

His case has prompted attorney Tempu Nefertari-Moheni, a Barbadian practising in Trinidad, to call on CARICOM leaders to develop a policy for nationals who run afoul of the law while visiting other member nations. (MB)
