TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO will be banking on the pair of Alruna and Niskey’s Boy to bring home the bacon for the twin-island republic in Tuesday’s Massy United Insurance Barbados Derby at the Garrison Savannah.
To add to their arsenal, owner of Niskey’s Boy, Shivam Maharaj, has picked 23-year-old Panamanian Miguel Angel Vasquez to partner his colt over 2 000 metres.
Based at Gulfstream Park in Florida, he has ridden 74 winners this year and trails Tyler Gaffialione (25) and Edgard Zayas (23) in the jockeys standings with 18 wins.
Vasquez will become the fourth United States-based jockey in recent times to ride at the Savannah in a pattern event. Before him were Jeffrey Sanchez, who partnered Grand Times in the Spa Sprint; Mario Pino on War Envoy; and Rafael Hernandez on High Noon Rider in the last two editions of the Gold Cup. (LY)
