UDC to mark 20th anniversary

Article by

THE URBAN DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION (UDC) will take the spotlight within a few days, when it celebrates its 20th anniversary with a week of activities.

20 Years of Empowering & Enriching Urban Barbados is the theme of the celebrations, which will commence on Sunday, August 6, with a thanksgiving service at Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic Church, Black Rock, St Michael, at 9 a.m.

On Tuesday, August 8, there will be a public lecture entitled: 20 Years of Empowering & Enriching Urban Barbados, at the Urban Development Commission, Bridge Street Mall, Bridge Street, Bridgetown, beginning at 7 p.m.

Community outreach in the form of a motorcade is planned for Wednesday, August 9, starting at the UDC’s Headquarters at 9:30 a.m. It will travel through the urban corridor and culminate at the UDC at 1:30 p.m.

A Wellness Day will be held on Thursday, August 10, at the Urban Development Commission, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Bridging Generations Through Wellness is the theme of the day and children in the community will participate. During the morning, there will be a lecture on Sports Not Drugs by Imran Richards, followed by a dancercise session. In the afternoon, employees of the UDC will teach and engage the children in 20 authentic Barbadian games, in an effort to bridge the generation gap. Health booths will also be set up during the day to provide information and samples, as well as health checks and testing.

The UDC’s mission is “to provide services and programmes that would assist in the alleviation of poverty; and to enhance the sustainable quality of life and high standards of living within the urban population”. (BGIS)
