A NUMBER OF Junior Kadooment bandleaders are planning to challenge the results of Saturday’s event.

Kevin Small’s Fifth Element was declared the overall winner with Candy Land 246 while Gwyneth Squires placed second with Kites At De Garrison Savannah.

Trevor Nicholls came third with Young Spirits Community Group – Colour Me Crop Over.

Bandleaders told STARCOM NETWORK they were not pleased with the outcome.

Squires said Nicholls won in more individual categories and should have been the overall winner.

She said they would be filing an objection with the National Cultural Foundation.

Nicholls said he won in nine categories and it was not clear what the criteria were for winning Best Junior Band.

“My concern is how could I have won so many prizes yet still I’m placed third,” he said, charging that the judging system was not fair.

Meanwhile, Small said he was disappointed in the reaction of his fellow bandleaders.

“My team and I went out and delivered a fantastic product. The judges loved it, the audience loved it, our band members loved it.

“I don’t think that I can necessarily go on what they’re saying. That’s their take. If you look at years gone by, there is a time I placed 2nd and walked away with more prizes than the eventual winner.

“Here it is now that I’m the winner – why is it that now they’re contesting it? These are people that I would have looked up to and I’m honestly very disappointed,” he said. (NB)
