AFTER MORE THAN 30 years of living in the same house, Theophilus “Toby” Cupen no longer has a roof over his head.

“The position is I was trying to have repairs done when piece collapse,” the 77-year-old said.

One portion of the Britton’s New Road, St Michael home collapsed last week, and Cupen apparently tried to continue living in the house while seeing to repairs when the rest of the house fell in this afternoon. Luckily, Cupen was not home at the time.

Senator Dr David Durant heard of Cupen’s predicament and quickly contacted the utility companies as well as the Urban Development Commission (UDC), and the Ministry of Transport and Works. He is the head of the nearby Restoration miniseries.

“Just after 2 p.m. I would have been told about this by my church members. I came to see if he was inside and thankfully he was not and he was uninjured. He told me the land is his and if that is true that will be a great help as the UDC could put back a house here,” he said.

In the meantime, Cupen said he would live in a shed behind his home while Durant arranged a temporary home for him via the Welfare Department. (CA)
