Gittens and Burke on to heats
BARBADOS’ TWO SPRINTERS have advanced to the heats of the men’s 100 metres at the IAAF World Championships in London.
Ramon Gittens and Mario Burke, both late additions to the individual event, did just enough to reach the next round.
Competing at the London Stadium this afternoon, Gittens won the fourth and final preliminary heat in 10.25 seconds, while Burke was second in his race in 10.23 seconds.
It was won by Slovakia’s Jan Volko in a new national record of 10.15 seconds.
Bahamian Warren Fraser also advanced with a time of 10.30 seconds, as did Chavaughn Walsh of Antigua and Barbuda with 10.44
The real test will come when the heats get underway at 3:20 p.m.
Gittens has been drawn in lane six of heat one, while Burke is in lane seven of the third heat.
Defending champion Usain Bolt of Jamaica is in the sixth and final heat. (SAT)
