Gittens, Burke for starters

THE LAST TWO men in will be the first ones up.

Top sprinters Ramon Gittens and Mario Burke are set to jump the gun for Barbados’ efforts at the IAAF World Championships around 2 p.m. when they contest the preliminaries, and hopefully the next round, of the men’s 100 metres in London today.

They headline an eight-member Bajan contingent featuring Commonwealth and Pan Am Games bronze medal sprint hurdler Shane Brathwaite and the record-breaking 4×100 relay squad.

But all eyes will be on Burke and Gittens today, as they get the show started in the opening session of a 100 metres event they actually didn’t qualify for after missing the cut-off mark of 10.12 seconds. (JM)
