RACHEL SMITH AND Damien “Force Ripe” Taylor won the National Cultural Foundation’s Bridgetown Road Tennis Tournament in contrasting styles when the event climaxed on Spring Garden on Sunday.

Smith, who had ended second best in most of her finals, played impressively to defeat a growing talent in Maudlyn Blunt 22-20, 21-18 in front of a large crowd.

The fit-looking Blunt had led 20-19 in the first game with some vicious turns through Smith’s forehand. However, a lack of experience saw Blunt folding at the critical juncture to give Smith an airline ticket to a Caribbean destination and $600. Blunt earned $400.

Earlier Smith defeated the consummate defender Susan Scantlebury in straight games, while Blunt needed three games to get by the colourful Carlyn “The Model” Haynes. (KB)
