Barbados ‘can lead’ digital finance

BARBADOS HAS A real opportunity to get ahead of the rest of the globe by rebuilding its economy on a foundation of financial technology.

American entrepreneur Patrick Byrne told the DAILY NATION that once authorities here and overseas, especially central banks, gave the green light for digital currency transactions minus the traditional commercial bank account, a world of opportunities and investment would follow.

He is already backing up his talk with action and he expects other foreign investors to follow. Byrne is the chief executive officer of United States Internet retailer Overstock.com Inc.

The electronic commerce pioneer has already invested US$4 million in Barbados-based fintech firm Bitt Inc. and plans to pump up to US$12 million more in the operation. (SC)
