BARBADOS’ TOP TWO female players Meagan Best and Karen Meakins advanced to the quarter-finals of the singles at the Pan American Squash Championship in Argentina.

After the Barbados five-member team endured mixed results during the first day of competition, with both Shawn Simpson and Rhett Cumberbatch losing their men’s matches, reigning Caribbean queen Best and captain Meakins showed their class with wins.

In the round of 16 play on Monday, Amanda Haywood was beaten by 5/8 Chilean Giselle Delgado 3-0 but Best defeated the 2016 Pan American junior and senior champion Mariam Kamal of the United States in a hard-fought match 13-11, 11-4, 11-9.

Meakins played steadily to beat 3/4 Reyna Pacheco of the United States in another close contest 11-9, 11-8, 6-11, 11-7. (PR/EZS)
