ISRILID GRIFFITH was in a celebratory mood yesterday, a day before becoming Barbados’ next centenarian.
She was surrounded by family, friends and church members to celebrate the special occasion at Crab Hill Wesleyan Holiness Church in St Lucy, where she has worshipped and been actively involved for the past 67 years.
The packed pews told a story of love and respect for the matriarch. The mother of seven – four of whom were deceased – is also grandmother of 11 and great-grandmother of 20. She has outlived her three brothers.
“My mother who was born on September 11, 1917, is a great mother and friend. She went to school at St Swithun’s Girls in those days and on leaving school, worked as a kitchen assistant at Cluffs Plantation in St Lucy, and in her latter days as a domestic in Speightstown, St Peter,” said daughter Sharon Griffith.
