Venezuela unrest seen as threat

SMALL CARIBBEAN STATES have been put on notice that the situation in Venezuela has become so serious that it now poses a national security threat to them.

Not only will human trafficking become a significant problem, but so too will the spill-over of organised crime, including drug trafficking, from the country that was one of the largest suppliers of drugs to the United States.

The alarm was sounded yesterday by Dr Anthony Gonzales, retired director of the Institute of International Relations at the University of the West Indies St Augustine Campus, Trinidad, who contended that Trinidad and Tobago and Colombia were already feeling the ill effects.
