Barbados may get a further boost in its 2017-2018 cruise business because of the damage to some Caribbean ports by Hurricane Irma.

While hardest hit islands such as the British Virgin Islands, US Virgin Islands and St Maarten that depend heavily on tourism embark on the long road to recovery, islands such as Barbados in the southern Caribbean that were untouched by the hurricane may yet benefit.

Managing director of Platinum Port Agency, Kevyn Yearwood, told the WEEKEND NATION since the passing of Irma, his agency had confirmed 20 additional homeporting calls for the Bridgetown Port for the November 2017 to April 2018 cruise season from one ship and had received another six queries.

It is business, he pointed out, that would normally have gone to St Maarten. (GC)
