Defending champions Preferred Brokers Pinelands nearly paid the price for complacency against the youthful Lady Tridents on Wednesday night.

But they recovered in time to win Game 1 of the No.1 Beauty Supply and Exchange Women’s League basketball best-of-three semi-final play-offs 79-72 at the Barbados Community College.

Pinelands led 26-16 at the end of the first quarter, 44-34 at the end of the second and 64-48 – a 16-point lead – at the end of the third. But they took their foot off the gas and were outscored by the schoolgirls 13-24 in the last quarter, managing to hold on to a seven-point cushion at the end.

Maria “Flowers” Cumberbatch again blossomed with a game-high 25 points, while the flamboyant Latifa Wood poured in 21 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for Pinelands. Tamisha Flatts and Kashera Corbin contributed nine points each, with Flatts also making six steals and effecting ten rebounds. (EZS)
