Maughn, Gill are chess kings
There is a new national Under-16 chess champion, but the Under-10 title remains in familiar hands.
Queen’s College student Shane Maughn captured his first national title by narrowly winning the Under-16 division while Jaydn Gill of Charles F Broome retained his Under-10 crown with a perfect record on the final day of the two-day championships at the St Michael School on Sunday.
In a keenly contested fight for the Under-16 title, in which five players stood a chance of winning going into the sixth and final round of games, Maughn pipped Kyle Sandiford on the tiebreak.
Maughn, who placed third last year, and Sandiford had earlier drawn their head to head clash, leaving the title to be decided on the second tiebreaker, which favoured Maughn, whose opponents had better overall results. (HG)
