Open sluice gate in evening

Dear Minister Richard Sealy,

If you may recall, you kindly took the time to talk to me on the morning of Wednesday, October 25, about my concerns surrounding the opening of the sluice gate at Worthing on to one of the nicest beaches in Barbados.

On Thursday, the flow was blocked and the polluted discharge soon dispersed, which allowed my two grandsons and our family to enjoy what we come to Barbados for – the sea and the beach.

Unfortunately, when I visited the beach the next morning, it would appear that the operation to block the flow was inadequate, with the consequence that the tide had washed away the sand from the gully exit, allowing the polluted water to once more discharge into the sea with the usual abhorrent stench. The consequence is that we are once again unable to utilise the beach or the sea in this area and will be forced to take our business away from the businesses which service this area.

Could I make a suggestion as to an interim solution, which would be to open the sluice at 6 p.m. and close it the following morning at 6 a.m.?

Surely this would be the better option than just opening it during the daytime hours, thereby deterring the tourists and disadvantaging the local businesses that rely on the income to survive during these times of austerity?
