The Ministry of Labour will be hosting the 2017 Annual Review Meeting of the Canada/Caribbean Seasonal Agricultural Workers’ Programme from November 19 to 24.

In recognition of the 50th Anniversary of Barbados’ participation in the Seasonal Workers’ Programme, a number of awards will be presented to workers, who have participated in the programme since its inception in 1967, during an opening ceremony on Sunday, November 19, at Hilton Barbados, Needhams Point, St Michael.

Minister of Labour, Social Security and Human Resource Development, Senator Dr Esther Byer Suckoo, as well as officials from the Canadian Farm Labour Programme, will deliver remarks during the opening ceremony, which gets under way at 6 p.m.

From November 20 to 22, Barbadian and Canadian officials will engage in wide-ranging discussions on the successes, challenges and the way forward for the programme.

Over the last 50 years, Barbadian men and women have travelled to various parts of Canada to take up job opportunities on farms, in areas such as harvesting, cultivating, pruning, spraying, canning and irrigation. (BGIS)
