Sports jobs in jeopardy
THIS SEASON may not be so merry for some Government staff. Certain jobs appear to be on the line at the three of Barbados’ sporting agencies as part of the proposed merger of the National Sports Council (NSC), Kensington Oval Management Inc. (KOMI) and the Gymnasium Limited.
Minister of Sports Stephen Lashley didn’t specify a number but did acknowledge there would be severances once the Cabinet eventually gave the merger the green light.
“The proposal, once approved, will result in greater efficiencies and yes, there will be some redundancies in addition to recruitment of persons to fill key positions in keeping with the overall thrust of the integration that is to reposition sports as a key pillar for economic growth and enhancement,” Lashley said in a written statement to the WEEKEND NATION.
“Under the proposal there will be savings but there will also be an enhanced functionality providing a more focused and professionalised sports development thrust.
“Once the Cabinet gives the green light to the proposal, discussions are to be held with the unions and relevant parties,” he added. (JM)
