Young catch

They are not the catch of the day, but despite their best efforts some fishermen still scoop up undergrown dolphins in their nets.

This comes months after Deputy Chief Fisheries Officer Joyce Leslie issued an advisory to fisherman to stop the practice, at a time when fish stocks were said
to be dwindling.

She said, then, that fishermen were in the habit of catching small dolphins that were not mature sexually. She said this reduced the number of recruits to successfully carry on fish generation due to negative impact on the reproductive cycle.

A fisherman, who did not want to be identified, said that it was not uncommon, especially at this time, for small dolphins to get hooked or caught, unknowingly. (TG)
