Canadian company Emera’s multimillion-dollar investment, which is expected to be a catalyst in the use of renewable energy in Barbados, has been welcomed by at least one official in the industry here.

Chief executive officer (CEO) of alternative energy company Innogen, Vancourt Rouse, said the $4.3 million being spent on research at the University of Brunswick in Canada by the Barbados Light & Power Co. Ltd’s (BL&P) parent company was a step in the right direction.

The scientists at the Canadian university, who are being led by engineering Professor Liuchen Chang, will collect data from Barbados for research, which in turn will be used to develop technologies that will be brought here to be installed and tested.

The five-year project is expected to speed up Barbados’ shift from fossil fuel to a green grid. (TG)
