Dominican all-rounder Kavem Hodge continues to impress on the local cricket circuit with another title-winning individual performance.

Fresh from leading UWI Blackbirds to the Elite Division and Inter-Parish Twenty20 titles, Hodge shone with bat and ball to help Kamale Broomes XI win the second Ashley Toppin Memorial Twenty20 Festival at North Stars, Crab Hill, St Lucy on Monday.

The diminutive right-hander, who is a student at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, top-scored with a measured 36 off 42 balls in Broomes XI’s challenging total of 154 for eight.

He then returned to grab two for 17 in four tidy overs of left-arm spin as Selwyn Archer’s XI were restricted to 136 for eight in their 20 overs. Hodge received excellent support from brothers, Ravendra and Indal Persaud who had the identical figures of two for 19 in their four overs.

Former Barbados fast-bowling all-rounder Ryan Nurse was also outstanding for Archer’s XI. He took three wickets for 30 runs with his right-arm fast-medium bowling and then returned to smash an unbeaten 44 off just 21 balls.

The burly Nurse, who bats left-handed, came to the crease at No. 8 with his team struggling on 83 for six after losing veteran Vonrick Nurse for a fluent 38 off 33 balls with five fours at the start of the 15th over.

With 71 runs required off 29 balls, Nurse clouted three sixes and four fours as he dominated a ninth-wicket stand of 40 runs in 3.3 overs with Deswin Currency, whose contribution was just three runs.

Broomes XI’s captain Larry Babb was flayed for 18 in his only over while Jamal Brome’s two overs cost 21 runs.

Earlier, Former West Indies’ fast bowler Fidel Edwards was also expensive, conceding 22 runs in his two overs. (EZS)
