With the South Coast sewage situation now attracting international attention, the United Progressive Party believes the government took too long to respond to the situation.
UPP leader Lynette Eastmond said had she been Prime Minister, the situation would have been addressed promptly.
“I think in the first instance, one of the things that wasn’t done, was that when people started to complain, there was a great delay in taking it seriously. So that is one of the things I would criticise at the outset. If I was Prime Minister, I would have listened to what the people were saying immediately and I would have responded,” she said.
She said the Prime Minister should have met with a team and come up with an action plan from the start of the crisis.
“Meet with the best team, you come up with a plan, and tell the people in the community and wider Barbados how you plan to approach it. Your immediate action plan could have been developed in a matter of hours; not in a matter of years. We believe in a continuous dialogue. There’s no reason why you should not be talking to the people on an ongoing basis, especially with the various platforms that we have now,” Eastmond stressed. (DB)
