A ding-dong battle is anticipated for the Under-13 boys’ 200 metres at the semi-finals of the National Primary Schools Athletics Championships (NAPSAC) next week Wednesday.

The top seven competitors qualified with extremely close times during the zone quarter-finals at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex Monday.

However, Jayden Green of St Cyprian’s Boys’ clocked the fastest time – 27.38 seconds. Second spot went to Shamari Addison of St Alban’s (27.42 seconds), while Green’s schoolmate Amari Forde qualified third with a time of 27.64 seconds.

Green also qualified for the 100 metres with the fourth-fastest time after Forde clocked the fastest time with 13.22 seconds.

One of the favourites in the boys’ competition, Ratanang Barker, won his heat but finished seventh overall in the 200 metres.

That performance, however, could be blamed on an injury he experienced on track earlier in the day.

Barker gave a creditable performance in the Open 800 metres but was denied victory when Tytan Hinkson of St Gabriel’s pipped him on the line, with him ending the race with a fall.

Nevertheless, Barker managed to qualify in 14th position and will be hoping to make a comeback for an entry to the final. He missed out on qualifying for the 400 metres when he limped through to finish that race.

Jalon Howell of Bay Primary qualified with the fastest time in that event, recording two minutes, 35.23 seconds.

Hilltop Primary’s Eboni Brathwaite smashed an eight-year-old record in the cricket ball throw. The ten-year-old eclipsed the old mark of 44.82 metres set by Shannon Goddard of Hilda Skeene Primary with a throw of 46.96 metres.

Kianna Brathwaite of Bay Primary also threw the cricket ball under the old mark and qualified for the semi-final with the second-longest measurement of 45.49 metres.

Ashlynn Simmons of Eden Lodge dominated the Under-13 Girls’ 400 and 600 metres, clocking 1:02.68 minutes and 1:43.92 minutes, respectively.

The victrix ludorum of the James Wedderburn Zone, Tania Applewhaite, recorded the fastest times going in the Under-11 Girls’ 100 metres (14.48 seconds) and 300 metres (46.67 seconds).

The talented athlete also advanced with the third-fastest time in the 200 metres, after her twin sister Tia was the fastest in 29.63 seconds. Tia also has a chance in the long jump, as she qualified in third position with 3.70 metres.

Solange Holford, who was also named the top girl at West Terrace in the zonal meets, qualified first in the long jump with a leap of 3.95 metres.

She won her heat in the 200 metres but finished sixth overall.

Chrisaria Ballantyne of Cuthbert Moore will go into the Under-13 semis with the fastest times in the 100 metres (13.90 seconds) and 200 metres (28.73 seconds). (RG)
