GOSPEL CALL: Just ask God!

God can and will do greater things in, through and among His people, but they must ask in faith and ask for the impossible.

This was the proclamation made by Ambassador Rev. Dr Jo Anne Lyon, as she addressed the congregation at Carrington Wesleyan Holiness Church during its centennial celebrations.

“Jesus wants you to ask. What is your ask? It is going to be much bigger than what you asked in the past and you are going to have to use your imagination to think about what your ‘ask’ will be,” she told those at the Welches, St Michael church.

As they ask, God would open doors, she added.

She advised her listeners not to get discouraged if their prayers were not answered right away.

“When you ask, when you pray, do not get discouraged if nothing happens right away. It’s not about what power you have but about God’s power. Ask for the impossible because He says with Him all things are possible.”

During the service which was attended by senior officials of the Wesleyan Holiness Church, Lyon also called on the church members to stay united in their vision and mission, and pray in the power of the Holy Spirit just as the disciples had in the upper room.

“Unity does not mean everybody may agree on the same point, but you should have the same vision. When people get their eyes off the vision and mission of the church, they start fighting with each other. When we keep our minds on what the vision and mission of the church is, there is no end to what God can do.”

She said while God no longer thundered out of Heaven as in times past, He spoke through His people.

“When you are filled with the Holy Spirit you are speaking for God. When the Holy Spirit is in you, wherever you go you change the atmosphere.”

As such, Lyon said for the church to do great things, the Holy Spirit must be residing on the inside of God’s people.

She stressed that the church must reach out to those without hope and be light in a dark world.

“God has called us to some of the darkest places right here in Barbados and in the world, and you take that light of Christ with you.”

She told the Wesleyans that “God is already doing a new thing among you, and He will do greater things through you”. (CH)
