Five new teams are among the 50 whose registration has been confirmed for the 31st annual Barbados Cup youth football tournament, which will run from April 1-7.

Two of the new teams, United Stars Alliance and Kings Park Rangers, will compete in the Under-11 category while Deacons Football Academy will participate in the Under-19 section of the tournament.

The other newcomers St Joseph Youth and Oxley United will match skills in the Under-13 division.

In addition, this year’s tournament has attracted five visiting teams from Trinidad and Tobago and St Vincent.

The Trinidad teams are SBS Football Club in the Under-13 age group as well as the Step By Step Football Academy, who will play in the Under-15 and Under-17 age groups.

This is the seventh visit by the Step By Step team, who last played in the tournament in 2013.

SVG Systems 3 of St Vincent are returning for their 21st visit and will compete in the Under-13 age group.

They placed third in last year’s tournament and will be looking to improve on their record.

The other St Vincent team is the Saints, who will challenge for the Under-17.

The tournament kicks off this Sunday, April 1, at 4 p.m. at the Parkinson Resource Centre with a parade of all the 50 participating teams.

The parade will be led off by the Graydon Sealy School marching band, and will also feature the Israel Lovell Foundation performers as well as the Barbados Community College music students.

Meanwhile, a press conference will be held today from 11 a.m. at the Parkinson Resource Centre to give an update on the tournament. (EZS)
