Eight months for Histal theft
Despite pleading with Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant to be sent to the Psychiatric Hospital, a 49-year-old drug addict was sent to HMP Dodds instead for eight months.
Anthony Ricardo Pryme, of no fixed place of abode, admitted on Monday to stealing a bottle of Histal worth $11.65 from Popular Discount last Saturday.
The District “A” Magistrates’ Court heard that Pryme went into the Spry Street, Bridgetown branch of the supermarket to where the item was displayed. He exited the store and was caught by the security officer. A search was conducted, and an empty bottle recovered. He admitted stealing the item.
In addressing the magistrate, Pryme said he had a drug problem.
“To be paid on Friday and have no money on Saturday is embarrassing. I promise to go to the Psychiatric Hospital if I am released today. I am sorry,” he said.
However, after consulting with prosecutor Sergeant Cameron Gibbons, Magistrate Cuffy-Sargeant told the man that he had “quite a history before the court”.
“Why didn’t you go to the polyclinic?” she asked him.
She sentenced him to eight months in prison, and advised that he utilise the drug rehabilitation programme while there. (RA)
