The Elective Synod of the Diocese of Barbados has resumed the process of electing a new Anglican bishop for Barbados following a brief lunch break. The assembly is seeking to appoint a replacement for Dr. John Holder who retired from the post in February.
Participants in the exercise have stated openly that they want the person elected to be guided by God, however, many remained tight-lipped on how the proceedings were coming along.
Nation News was able to attain that favourites are still Reverend John Rogers, 45, rector of St. George Parish Church and rural dean of St. John and Reverend Dr. Jeffery Gibson, 61, dean of the Cathedral of St. Michael and All Angels.
Some expressed concern that Rogers may be too young to assume to the role ‘Chief Shepherd’, others disagreed, suggesting that a young bishop would inject fresh energy into the Anglican community.
The House of Clergy has 91 members comprised of all the priests from the Anglican churches in Barbados, while the House of Laity has two representatives of Synod from each of the Anglican churches with 84 members. The successful candidate must gain a two-thirds majority vote from both houses of the Elective Synod.
The announcement of the new bishop is expected later this evening.
