Fifty-one days after Parliament’s automatic dissolution, Prime Minister’s Freundel Stuart’s announcement of the much anticipated election date has been met with some measure of relief from the leader of Solutions Barbados (SB).
However, Grenville Phillips has promised that under a SB government Barbados will never experience such a protracted time. That’s why he revealed that under his party, Barbadians would be informed of the election and nomination date 12 months before it was constitutionally due.
“Ultimately it was his [Prime minister Freundel Stuart] decision . . . . What we plan to do is give at least one year’s notice so when we get in we will give one year’s notice about when the next election is and there is certainty in the country,” he added.
On whether the three-year-old party was ready to face the polls in its maiden election on May 24 amid recent reports that several of its members had tendered resignation letters though later withdrawn, the St George North candidate maintained they were ready.
The issues that surrounded the letters, which were related to reservations about a contract that Phillips stressed was mandatory for all candidates of the party to sign.
He said they had 26 candidates and he was positive that SB will field a full slate of 30 candidate come Nomination Day on May 7. (SDB Media)
