An engineering team from the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) assisted by private consultants have been working throughout the night to diagnose and commence repairing of a failed screw lift pump at the South Coast Sewage Treatment Plant (SCSTP). In the interim, an additional standby, ten-inch auxiliary pump is being commissioned to boost the influential pumping capacity.

Mechanical failure around six on Wednesday evening has been attributed to the breakdown of one of the two screw lifts in operation at the plant.

Overnight the BWA’s Wastewater Division (WWD) crews closely managed mitigating measures to keep wastewater levels low and prevent an increase in overflows in the troubled areas on the south coast. This will continue.

The BWA will update the public as the situation progresses. (PR)
