Semis face-off tonight
Defending champion Sheldene Walrond will face either Rachel Smith or veteran Sandra Bailey while three-time queen Kim Holder battles Abigail Haynes tonight in the semi-finals of the fifth edition of the Touch of Class Women’s Road Tennis Championship at the Deighton “Pa” Roach Tennis Facility, Bush Hall.
Both Walrond and Holder put aside their recent losses in the St James tournament by scoring impressive wins on Tuesday night. Walrond, who had ended Holder’s bid to win a fourth successive Touch of Class, eased past veteran Estherphyne Holder 21-19, 21-12.
Holder, in spite of several unforced errors, brought about by her natural aggression found easy prey in the stylish Cherene Ward dismissing her 21-11, 21-9. Another player in the top four, Abigail Haynes, had to fight to stop former Barbados table tennis player Julia Morris-Young 21-14, 19-21, 21-17.
Smith, who had captured the St James crown with record victories over Holder, the number one seed, and Walrond, the number two seed, was expected to defeat Bailey last night. Bailey had to call on all of her experience on Tuesday night to stop Holder’s 18-year-old daughter Kyana Holder 22-20, 18-21, 21-16.
Kyana’s aggression may have also cost her the match with Bailey almost scoring a straight sets win after surging from 5-16 to reach 16-18 in the second game. Smith was expected to continue her good form to take out Bailey and book another showdown with Walrond.
Several exciting matches were on tap Tuesday night with Margo Lorde handing two pigs to Donna Holder 21-8, 21-9 in the veterans. Julie Howard edged Tamara Nicholls in a novice battle 21-14, 18-21, 21-17. The juniors clash between Ranesha Stewart and Adrianna Johnson-Leacock was just as keen with Stewart winning 21-9, 17-21, 21-15.
Early in the night Lorde lost her ‘A’ class match to Haynes at 12 and 18. In the lone doubles match, Walrond and Smith defeated Morris-Young and Miranda Manning 21-14. (KB)
