Queen’s College is the school of choice among this year’s top students who wrote the Barbados Secondary Schools Entrance Examination.

Of those 23 top students, inclusive of 12 early sitters, 14 opted for Queen’s College, four for Harrison College, two will be attending Christ Church Foundation School, and one each earned a spot at The St Michael School, Alexandra School and The Lester Vaughan School.

This year, 3 418 students from 68 public primary schools and 24 private primary schools took the exam on May 8 in comparison to last year’s 3 216 and 3 527 in 2016. Additionally, 47 students granted exemptions have been allocated to institutions catering to their needs namely: the Ann Hill School, the Special Unit at Erdiston, Ellerton Primary, All Saints, Eagle Hall, Charles F. Broome and Derrick Smith.

Of the top performers, 15 were from public schools with the other eight from private schools.

Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw said while this year ten students – seven males and three females – scored top marks in mathematics, there had been a marginal decrease in the number of students who scored full marks when compared to the 13 in 2017.

“The national mean in maths this year is 62.46; a 7.46 increase over 2017 when it was 55.0 and 48.3 in 2016. The overall performance in math has shown significant improvement. There has been an overall increase in the performance of both males and females over the period 2016 and 2018.

“For the females, the performance overall has increased to 65.26 in 2018 from 58.1 last year, and 51.92 in 2016. The overall performance for males has increased to 59.73 this year from 51.8 last year and 44.71 in 2016,” she said during a press conference yesterday at the ministry’s Constitution Road headquarters.

She added that although there had been an improvement in the students overall performance in maths, there had been no significant improvement in the number of schools, both public and private, which performed above the national mean.

“What the results do reveal, however, is that there is a core of schools that are consistently in the top performing 25 schools, and there is also a corresponding group of schools that perform the complete opposite. This matter has been gaining my urgent attention and the ministry’s staff, and it has become an agenda item which I have made a high priority,” she said. (RA)
