South Coast property inspections tomorrow

The Barbados Water Authority (BWA) will be conducting inspections of residences and businesses along the south coast this Friday, June 15, to determine whether properties have the correct sewer connections and appropriately-sized grease traps.

Disclosing that personnel have located “a number of illegal connections” during previous investigations, the BWA explained that the action was part of efforts to tackle the improper disposal of fats, oils and grease. It stated that these substances harden and accumulate in the system, ultimately creating blockages and breaches, which eventually result in sewage overflows.

The utility company has also sought to remind people that the failure to have appropriately-sized grease traps and proper sewer connections was a breach of the Barbados Water Authority Regulations 1982, Regulations 9 (6), (7), and (8). Those found guilty of an offence is liable on summary conviction to a fine of $1 000 or imprisonment for 12 months, or both.

The BWA has further advised that it is an offence to obstruct its employees or agents in the performance of their functions. Anyone convicted of this offence would be subject to a fine or imprisonment. (BWA/BGIS)
