West Terrace Tigers roared the loudest when the inaugural National Primary Schools Invitational Volleyball Competition was held yesterday at the Wildey Gymnasium.
After playing unbeaten among the four schools, West Terrace captured the crown with a straight sets win over St Christopher Primary 15-6, 15-4. Kai White and Nalani Cumberbatch, who were later voted the respective male and female MVPs, were instrumental in the Tigers success.
In the preliminary match, West Terrace had defeated St. Christopher 21-10. The Tigers also crushed Eden Lodge Primary 21-3 and mauled St Stephen’s Primary 21-4. St Christopher defeated St Stephen’s 21-15 and edged Eden Lodge 21-17.
St Stephen’s had beaten Eden Lodge 21-17 in the preliminaries but in the third place contest Eden Lodge rose to victory 21-19.
Tournament organiser Julia Broome indicated that the 2019 edition will not be invitational and schools will be encouraged to register early to participate. Former national captain Elwyn Oxley has already indicated interest in assisting a primary school to prepare for the next competition. (KB)
